We welcome you to the friends of the Tumalo Wildlife Corridor (fTWC) website.
The fTWC is a grassroots organization formed in February 2013 registered as a public benefit non-profit organization 996512-92 with the State of Oregon and approved as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization by the IRS. Your donations are tax deductible.
Mission:
The mission of the fTWC is to educate, encourage and cooperate with the general public, local landowners and public agencies to
- safeguard the future of the unique habitat within the Tumalo Wildlife Corridor while providing for human enjoyment and recreation within the regulations and guidelines of the Federal, State and local agencies and more generally, the Upper Deschutes Resource Management Plan of 2007 and
- research vegetative habitat and animal migration patterns within the Tumalo Wildlife Corridor.
Definition:
“A wildlife corridor is a link between habitats, with predominantly native vegetation, which joins two or more larger areas of similar wildlife habitat. Corridors are critical for the maintenance of ecological processes including allowing for the movement of animals and the continuation of viable populations.” (see entire monograph)
For practical purposes, the Tumalo Wildlife Corridor is arbitrarily consistent with the area included in the Winter Range Cooperative Closure with initial emphasis on the Tumalo Natural Area. The illegal activities that provoked the creation of fTWC included:
- target shooting, unlicensed hunting out of season and poaching,
- hazardous material dumping and
- unauthorized off-highway vehicle use within BLM properties (year round) and any unauthorized vehicular activity within the WRCC between December 1st and March 31st.
